Avtex Helped Sun Country Improve Collaboration Using the Microsoft Cloud

Sun Country employs hundreds of desk-less employees like flight attendees, pilots, and ground crews. Since these employees spend most of their time in airports they rely on their mobile devices for communication, which was not provided by their corporate IT department.

Instead they used various alternative methods to communicate, which were not supported by the organization’s IT department and also were not consistent. Employees needed to be able to check their e-mails frequently to see things like training schedules, important notifications from HR, etc, and be able to be in constant communication with corporate users. Sun Country needed to provide corporate e-mail services for these employees but did not have the capacity to do so with their on premise system.

By moving Outlook access into the cloud, Sun Country has been able to provide high availability to all of our users without expanding our services to provide access. This saves us not only money but also time.

The Challenge

Therefore it was decided to deploy Exchange Online in the cloud so that these employees could have access to their corporate e-mail on their mobile device. A rapid deployment was necessary along with a solution that would provide high availability as well as allow the IT department to remain in seamless control over user account access.

The Solution

Looking to solve their business problem, Sun Country engaged Avtex to migrate their system to Microsoft Office 365 in the cloud. Office 365 was utilized to provide these users with e-mail access via Outlook Web App and ActiveSync for their mobile devices. These employees could now check their corporate e-mail at any time, from anywhere, on their mobile devices. In addition, Avtex deployed Exchange hybrid capabilities and Active Directory Federation Services which provided a seamless integration for these users to collaborate with existing corporate based users. By deploying Active Directory Federation Services, users were given the ability to authenticate to Office 365 resources by using their existing network credentials and IT maintained their control on user account access.

The Results

Since migrating to Office 365, Sun Country has seen a significant shift in the ease of managing their hosted environment. Office 365 reduces operational cost by not having to expand or add servers to provide access, increases capacity, and improves collaboration.

E-mail access was rapidly deployed to these users and provided a corporate collaboration method for communication. Sun Country’s IT department has been allowed to continue to manage these users with a familiar management interface by the use of Exchange Hybrid and continue to have control over access. The solution has provided a rapid deployment method coupled with built-in redundancy and protection against data loss due to system failure. These desk-less employees are now in constant communication with corporate users and with themselves by adding access capabilities through ActiveSync.
